Did you spot our work on the cover of IRSE news?

We’re happy to announce that one of my rich pictures has made the cover of the May edition of IRSE news. IRSE stands for the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers and is well… an institution in more ways than one.

Founded over 100-years ago, in 1912, the institution’s objective is for the advancement for the public benefit of the science and practice of signalling by the promotion of research, the collection, and publication of educational material, and the holding of conferences, seminars, and meetings.

Over the years we’ve worked on a disproportionally large number of projects connected to railway signalling. Many of my clients are of course members of the IRSE, these include Hitachi Information Control Systems, DEG Signal (now Ramboll), UKKRIN, BCRRE, Network Rail’s Three Bridges ROC, and Transport for London.

It was for that last client, TfL, that this image was originally created in 2018. They were looking for a graphic to capture all 22 parts of their organisation, that was being transformed into one engineering entity. The work was commissioned by TfL’s engineering team, led by George Clarke, Director of Engineering, TfL, who was also the President of the IRSE (2019-2020).

Paul Darlington, the Managing editor of IRSE news, spotted the illustration on LinkedIn in early 2021 and comments, “I noticed it on LinkedIn and what attracted me to it as editor of IRSE News was because it shows a truly ‘connected’ railway involving (for example) main line and metro signalling and train control, station information and security, train diagnostic systems and passenger aps.”

He goes on to add, “It was something I’d had in mind for a while so it was great to obtain Will’s and TfL agreement for it to be used to summarise all the IRSE is involved with.”
