Transport for London: New Tube for London

From sketches to worked up illustrations

Context
On the 9th October 2014, Transport for London announced the concept designs for the New Tube for London (NTfL). In the previous nine months leading up to this, WillB was involved in the development of the operational concept for the NTfL, by way of illustrating the future environment.
Solution
The operational concept was visualised by depicting a Day In The Life of numerous TfL staff in the year 2028.  Working with TfL, our illustrator (Willustrator as he was affectionately known) attended 34 meetings over a nine-month period. Sitting at the back of the room, he worked in a similar manner to a courtroom artist. However, the illustrator didn’t sketch the people in the room; he sketched the concepts discussed. Post-meeting, back at the WillB offices, these sketches were worked up into high quality vector illustrations, and compiled into a reference book to be used alongside written records of the meetings.
Result
The illustrations were then used as source material by TfL, to provide a rich picture to the potential bidders of a £1Billion order of 250 rolling stock for the NTfL.
